EVANSTON, Ill. -- Six pool records and one Northwestern school mark fell Saturday afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center, but it was the No. 6 Wolverines who did more of the breaking, defeating the No. 15 Wildcats, 166-125.
Michigan broke four pool records, while Northwestern took down two. Junior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) also bettered the school record in the 200 back, which was the oldest-existing record on the books at NU.
The meet began in fantastic fashion for the Wildcats (5-4), with Grevers, sophomore David Kormushoff (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), sophomore Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and senior Ben Dexter (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) combining to break the pool record and win the 400 medley relay in 3:14.96.
Michigan took the first individual event, with Matt Patton swimming a pool record 8:57.92 to win the 1000 free.
Two events later, Grevers nailed his second pool record of the meet, winning the 100 back with an NCAA 'A' time of 46.85.
Kormushoff followed Grevers with a win in the 100 breast, swimming a 56.49 to win the race.
In the 50 free, Bubolz and Dexter swept the top two positions, with Bubolz finishing in 20.52 and Dexter turning in a 21.05 to take second.
The 200 backstroke featured a dual between Grevers and Michigan's Chris DeJong. Both swam 'A' cut times, but DeJong came out on top with a pool record of 1:42.41. Grevers' time of 1:42.59 still was good enough to best Brian Walters' 1999 Northwestern school record of 1:42.70.
Patton felled his second pool record of the meet with a 4:24.41 to win the 500 free. His teammate Davis Tarwater then broke the 100 fly pool mark with a 47.64.
In his final home meet, senior Mike Oxman (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) won the 1-meter board with a 351.00 before taking second on the 3-meter board with a 319.50.
Northwestern returns to action at the Big Ten Championships Feb. 23-25 in Bloomington, Ind.
