EVANSTON, Ill. -- After one day of competition at the Norris Aquatics Center, No. 14 Northwestern leads visiting Iowa, 96-51, midway through a two-day dual meet.
NU won all eight of Friday's events.
Sophomore Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) broke a pair of pool records for the Wildcats, winning the 400 IM in 3:50.23 and the 200 breast in 1:57.06. He added a third victory in the 500 free with a time of 4:35.57
Also winning races for Northwestern were freshman Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) in the 100 free (44.76), sophomore Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) in the 200 back (1:50.65) and freshman David Kormushoff in the 100 fly (49.66).
Winning the 200 free relay for Northwestern was the team of Matt Wever (Boise, Idaho/Boise), Jimmy Sourbeer (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic), Ben Dexter (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and Bubolz with a time of 1:22.29. The team of Grevers, Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West), Bubolz and Kormushoff took the 400 medley relay in 3:27.63.
Senior Mike Gustafson (Lowell, Mich.) finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 3:58.32, while Kormushoff (100 free; 45.94), freshman Eric Simpson (200 back; 1:51.88) and Bubolz (100 fly; 49.80) also recorded second position finishes for NU.
The meet will conclude Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m.
