MINNEAPOLIS -- Although Northwestern was not in the running for the Big Ten championship heading into the final event (400 freestyle relay), the Wildcats played a major role in deciding whether Minnesota or Indiana would claim this year's crown.
With Indiana holding a five-point lead going into the final event, the Hoosiers just needed to win the event or finish within one spot of the Gophers. The Wildcats, who were going for their fourth relay championship, battled for the relay crown, but the Gophers' Igor Cerensek, with a strong home-pool advantage, edged Northwestern and freshman Dave Kormushoff by 0.53 seconds, while Indiana finished third. That gave the Golden Gophers the Big Ten title by three points over the Hoosiers. It was Minnesota's fourth title in five years.
Northwestern, which finished in fourth place with 432 points, did not capture any event titles on the final day after winning seven of the first 14. Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), finished second in the 200 freestyle with an NCAA-A time of 43.00. It was the first time in his career he did not win an individual Big Ten title. He finished the meet with five first-place and two second-place titles.
Freshman Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) placed fifth in the 200 freestyle and Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West) finished fifth in the 200 breast. Diver Mike Oxman (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) placed seventh in the 3-meter platform event.
