'Cats Fall at No. 3 Illinois, 29-6

EVANSTON, Ill. - 18th-ranked Northwestern (9-5, 2-5 Big Ten) fell at third-ranked Illinois (15-1-1, 6-0-1) Thursday night, 29-6.
Juniors John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) and Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) posted the only two Wildcat victories of the night.
With the `Cats down 9-3, Velez -- ranked 10th in the nation at 125 lbs. -- provided NU with a huge victory by upsetting second-ranked Kyle Ott. Velez handed Ott his first Big Ten loss of the season courtesy of a 5-3 decision.
The two were knotted 3-3 as time in the third round ran down. Velez scored a dramatic takedown with six seconds left to secure the upset, improving to 13-2 on the year and 4-1 in the Big Ten.
13th-ranked Delguyd's victory came earlier in the night against 16th-ranked Tyrone Byrd at 197 lbs. Tied at 3-3 after regulation, the two moved to overtime. Neither scored in the first overtime, but in the second extra frame, Delguyd recorded an escape for the 4-3 decision.
Delguyd has won nine of his last 10 matches and improves to a team-leading 25-5 record.
Third-ranked Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) fell to fourth-ranked Pete Friedl at 174 lbs. The loss snaps Herbert's perfect 22-0 record.
Northwestern will close its dual schedule at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20 against Wisconsin.
It will be the final home match for seniors Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop McNamara) Jon Ott (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) Scott Johnson (Kanab, Utah/Kanab) and Matt Repchak (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit).
