EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern's 58th-ranked men's tennis team picked up its third-straight win after taking down No. 62 Ball State 5-2 at Combe Tennis Center.
"After a slow start (in doubles), I thought we played pretty well," said head coach Paul Torricelli, who is now just one win away from his 300th at NU. "This was a good win with a good performance in singles."
The Wildcats won in convincing style by taking five of the six singles matches. Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) started the rout with his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Matt Laramore at No. 2, and then Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) followed by topping Klint Knable 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5.
Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) clinched the win for Northwestern by edging Matthew Baccarani 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1.
Although the 'Cats (5-2, 0-1 Big Ten) lost the doubles point, the team of Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) stayed perfect this season (6-0) with their 8-5 win over Klint Knable and Paul Newman at No. 3.
"Ball State fought hard and outplayed us in doubles," said Torricelli. "I felt we were too complacent."
Northwestern will remain at home when it faces Drake at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs (0-0) are coached by former NU assistant Jay Udwadia.
