EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State held Northwestern--the highest scoring team in the Big Ten entering the match--scoreless Sunday afternoon to claim a 1-0 victory in NU's conference opener.

The Wildcats came into the match averaging 2.3 goals per game. The shutout marks only the third time in ten games NU's potent attack has been held under a single goal.

Michigan State (6-2, 1-1 Big Ten) got an early goal at the 16:47 mark from Ryan McMahen and made that score hold up.

NU (6-3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) nearly equalized in the second half, but a Wildcat shot rebounded harmlessly off the crossbar.

MSU outcornered Northwestern 9-5 in the match, earning an 8-2 advantage in corners in the first half. The Spartans also held a 16-8 lead in total shots.

The Wildcats return home next weekend for the first time since September 12th for home matches Friday against Penn State and Sunday versus Western Illinois.
