CHARLESTON, Ill.--Northwestern's wrestling team had little difficulty with its second away match over the weekend, crushing Eastern Illinois 37-3.

As they did in Friday's 22-18 win over Eastern Michigan, John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) and Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) both notched wins by technical fall. The former, ranked 10th in the nation by Intermat.com, tallied a 20-3 win over Kevin McNicholas at 125 lbs. while the latter picked up a 19-4 win over Jason Sherko at 197 lbs.

"John is wrestling very well," said Northwestern head coach Tim Cysewski. "He is not letting anyone come close to him. He is dictating his bouts from start to finish."

As a team, the Wildcats (8-1) performed better than Friday night, winning all but one bout against the Panthers (4-6).

"Physically and emotionally we are hurting right now," said Eastern Illinois head coach Ralph McCausland. "However, our freshman stepped up today, and we were much more competitive as well ... but I am still unpleased with the results."

NU cruised to a 26-0 lead beginning with Paul Augle's (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) 4-0 decision over Bob Fangerow at 141 lbs. and ending with Delguyd's technical fall. Velez and Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park), who won by forfeit at 133 lbs., picked up the final 11 points.

"Eastern Illinois is always going to be a team you have to be ready for," said Cysewski. "They are well-coached, so you cannot let them in the match at all. Our team wrestled with more of a purpose and urgency than they did on Friday, and that helped us get the win."

The Wildcats will take on Iowa 7 p.m. Friday night in Iowa City, Iowa to open the Big Ten season.
