EVANSTON, Ill. - Penn State jumped all over Northwestern in the first half of Saturday's women's lacrosse game at Lakeside Field en route to a 12-7 victory. The game marked the sixth time in the last seven games the Wildcats have played against a ranked team; the 'Cats are 1-5 in those contests
The 10th-ranked Nittany Lions outscored the Wildcats 9-0 in the first half to put a significant cushion between the teams by halftime, and kept NU at bay until a final flurry in the game's final 10 minutes.
Penn State took some time in getting going Saturday, but after Lori Havrilla scored 8:55 into the game the floodgates opened. Havrilla and Kristen Burke had two goals apiece in the first half, while Katie Jeschke added a free-position goal and two assists. For the game, Penn State attempted a staggering 13 free-position shots.
Northwestern finally got on the board 1:18 into the second half when Erin Flynn converted a feed from Lindsey Munday. Less than two minutes later it was Munday's turn to score, as the freshman took a long feed from classmate Laura Glassanos to make the score 9-2.
Penn State got those goals back over the next six minutes to get the advantage back up to nine (11-2), before Munday netted her second on a nice individual effort. Penn State again answered, this time from Shari Maslin.
However, NU came to life in the final 10 minutes with four unanswered goals. Courtney Koester used some nice spin moves to get in front and score, and then just 31 seconds later Donna McCann scored her first of the day on a free-position effort. McCann then assisted Munday's final goal and had another free-position goal in the game's final five minutes.
Ashley Gersuk had 12 saves in the NU goal; PSU's Lee Tortorelli had 10 stops.
Northwestern plays its home finale Monday afternoon, hosting Davidson at 4 p.m. on Lakeside Field.
