
Wildcats Defeat Lady Lions, 6-1

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - After taking a stumble last weekend, the Northwestern women's tennis team got back on track with a 6-1 win over Penn State Saturday afternoon at the Sarni Tennis Center. The No. 19 Wildcats move to 14-7 on the season and 6-1 in the Big Ten, while Penn State falls to 2-5 in conference play and 7-10 overall.
The 'Cats opened the match by taking two of the three doubles contests for the first point. No. 8 Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush dominated PSU's No. 1 tandem of Leigh Ann Merryman and Maaria Husain, 8-0. Connie Chiang and Ruth Barnes defeated Lindsay Downing and April Uy at No. 3, 8-5 for the first point of the match.
In singles, Northwestern won five of the six matches for the 6-1 win. No. 6 Grier improved her dual-match record to 20-0 with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Megan Marton at No. 1. Rush, ranked 62nd in the latest national rankings, took care of Merryman in straight sets at No. 2 (6-1, 6-3). At No. 4, Andrea Yung handed Judy Wang a 6-0, 6-3 loss. Barnes was the 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 5 over Downing. Returning to the lineup after suffering a foot injury, Stacy Kokx knocked off Uy at No. 6, 6-4, 6-2. Penn State's only win of the match came at No. 3 where Husain downed Jamie Peisel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
The 'Cats are back in action on Sunday as they meet the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio. The match will begin at 11 a.m. (Central).
