Wildcats Knock Off Brown, 11-10

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Northwestern women's lacrosse team is in just its second year back as a varsity program, but evidence that the Wildcats have made major strides showed up immediately Saturday when they knocked off Brown, 11-10, at Harvard's Jordan Turf Field.
The win avenged a 13-6 loss from a year ago in Providence.
"We are obviously very excited by this win," said head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "This really has us looking forward to playing Harvard tomorrow."
Northwestern -- who will play this season without Sarah Albrecht, last year's leading scorer who tore her ACL in preseason -- was paced by sophomore Courtney Flynn. She had five goals, including the game-winner with 5:55 to play. After that, the 'Cats did an excellent job of playing keepaway to secure the victory.
Freshman Lynda McCandlish added three goals , while junior Courtney Koester had a stellar all-around game with two goals, five draw controls and four ground balls. Freshman Lindsey Munday was also a goalscorer.
It was an action-packed first half, as the teams finished the stanza tied at 7-7. The game remained even throughout the second half, until Flynn's final goal broke a 10-10 tie and propelled NU to the win.
In goal, Ashley Gersuk had six saves.
Northwestern is back in action Sunday, remaining in Cambridge to take on Harvard at noon.
