MILWAUKEE - No. 15 Northwestern swept doubles and won four of the six singles matches to defeat Marquette, 5-2, Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee. Northwestern improves to 8-6 on the season. Marquette falls to 1-10.
NU took the early lead as the 'Cats swept doubles. Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush defeated Michelle Mojzis and Anna Pavlovic at No. 1, 8-2. At No. 2 Andrea Yung and Ruth Barnes were the 8-5 victors over Annabelle Espinosa and Veronica Garcia Briseno. Jamie Peisel and Kristi Roemer defeated Alexandra Stankovic and Eva Trujillo Herrera, 8-5, at No. 3.
In singles, Northwestern won four of the six matches en route to the 5-2 win. Peisel won at No. 3, defeating Espinosa 6-1, 6-2. Barnes, dropped the first set to Garcia Briseno at No. 4, but rallied to win the second and force a tiebreaker. Barnes held on for the 5-7, 7-6(4)(10-7) win. Stacy Kokx was the 6-4, 6-2 winner over Pavlovic at No. 5 and Roemer defeated Genevieve Charron, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
Marquette won matches at No. 1 and 2 for its only points of the match. Down after the first set, MU's Mojzis rebounded to defeat Rush at No. 1, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). Yung fell to Trujillo Herrera at No. 2 3-6, 6-4 (10-7).
Northwestern travels to Madison, Wis., on Saturday, March 8 for a Big Ten match with Wisconsin. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
