Sophomore Andrea Yung's 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 gave NU its first point of the match in the 'Cats 4-3 loss to Kentucky Saturday afternoon in Lexington.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 11 Wildcats were edged by No. 30 Kentucky, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. With the loss, Northwestern falls to 6-5 on the season as Kentucky improves to 6-4.

Kentucky opened the match with a roar, sweeping doubles for the first point of the match.

In singles, Kentucky kept its claws in the Wildcats, winning all six of the first sets. No. 48 Natalie Roels gave UK a 2-0 lead with her 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over No. 63 Jessica Rush at No. 2. Northwestern rallied back and put its first point on the board as Andrea Yung defeated Jill Buckley, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3.

Down 3-6 after the first set, freshman Cristelle Grier rebounded to win the second set (6-3) to force a third at No. 1 against No. 37 Sarah Witten. In the third, both ladies held serve to force a tiebreaker. Grier proved to be too much for Witten, winning the tiebreaker 7-4, for the 7-6 win for NU's second point of the match.

Tied at two all, Jamie Peisel, ranked 76th, gave Northwestern its first lead of the match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Shannon Stafford at No. 4. Kentucky, answered with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 where Shannon Stough defeated Stacy Kokx to tie the match at three.

With the match on the line, No. 89 Amy Trefethen overpowered Ruth Barnes at No. 5 to clinch the match. Trefethen was the 6-4, 6-1 victor, giving Kentucky the 4-3 win.

The four-time defending Big Ten champion Wildcats will open the 2003 Conference schedule Sunday at Indiana. Match time is slated for 11 a.m. Central.
