
Northwestern Knocks Off Northern Illinois, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern met Northern Illinois for the 28th time Sunday at Combe Tennis Center-and NU picked up win No. 28 against its in-state rival. The 'Cats rolled to a 5-2 win and improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Huskies fell to 1-1.
Freshman Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) clinched the match for Northwestern with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win against NIU's David Pickel. Schaechterle is 7-5 in 2003.
The Wildcats dropped the doubles point, losing at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. But Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) defeated Juan Pablo Barriga and Erick Martinez, the No. 20 duo in the nation. Jenkins and Perrin are a team-best 6-1 on the season.
Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) also picked up wins for NU. Axler made quick work of Martinez, 6-2, 6-2, and Wahla held on for a 7-5, 6-4 win against Stephen Guntly. Jenkins and Perrin also won their singles matches.
Northwestern returns to action Jan. 26 at No. 28 Arkansas.
