EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern dropped four matches by two points or less as it lost to Northern Illinois, 27-6, Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. With the loss, NU dropped to 5-4 on the season.
Sophomore John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) gave the 'Cats an early 3-0 edge after defeating the Huskies' Marlon Felton at 125 pounds. But NIU reeled off five wins in a row to go up 17-3.
Senior Jason Erwinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel) downed NIU's Bill Downey at 174 pounds, improving his record to 15-9 this year.
Sophomore Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop McNamara) made his second start at 165 pounds, a step up from his usual weight class, where he lost to the Huskies' Jeremy Benesh, 2-0.
Northwestern opens up Big Ten competition next weekend at Welsh-Ryan Arena, as it hosts Michigan State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Wisconsin on Sunday at 3 p.m.
