EVANSTON, Ill. - Virginia Tech used a fast start and Northwestern never recovered Monday morning at Lakeside Field, as the Hokies earned a 10-5 victory over the Wildcats in women's lacrosse action.

The Hokies (5-5) scored five goals in the first 6:35 of the contest and the first seven of the game and never looked back. NU got two of the goals back before halftime arrived, and on two occasions in the second half cut the deficit to four goals. However, Virginia Tech answered with a goal less than a minute later both times in holding the Wildcats at bay.

Lisa Tsimbidis got the scoring started with a free-position effort just 1:46 into the game, and Lacey Dieringer followed that up 40 seconds later with another goal. Tsimbidis converted a Samantha Sybert feed at the 2:54 mark, before Katie Madden hit a free-position shot at 4:28. Dieringer closed out the quick start with her second of the game at the 6:35 mark, with an assist going to Lisa Givens.

Northwestern (2-5) gave up two more goals over the next 11 minutes, to Kate Threadgold and Sybert, before finally getting on the board with 11:36 to play in the half as Courtney Koester converted a pass from Donna McCann. Four minutes later, Angela McMahon tallied her first of the day to make the score 7-2 by halftime.

Sarah Albrecht converted a free-position attempt just 1:26 into the second half, but any momentum NU gained from that was quelled just 25 seconds later when Lauren Kenney scored off a Kathleen Coolahan feed.

Tech scored again with 14:42 to play, as Dieringer notched her third of the day. Northwestern sandwiched goals by McCann and Albrecht around a Sybert goal to close out the scoring.

Ashley Gersuk was in the nets for the Wildcats and recorded seven saves. For Virginia Tech, Jamie McGraw had 12 stops, and was helped by two NU shots that hit off the pipes.

Northwestern is off for the rest of the week before taking on the University of New Hampshire Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern in Durham, N.H.
