EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 46 Northwestern men's tennis team defeated No. 75 Ball State, 5-2, on Saturday to post a 5-1 record in the season-opening six match homestand.

Despite losing the team doubles point, NU's No. 3 tandem of junior Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and freshman Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) won their fifth consecutive doubles match to remain undefeated in the dual season.

The Wildcats took five of the six singles matches to win the dual, which lasted only two hours and 45 minutes.

Hanus, playing at the No. 2 position, defeated Andrew Seni, 6-2, 6-1, to remain undefeated in dual match play. The freshman has the best record among the team at 6-0.

Every singles match only played two sets, including senior Ryan Edlefsen's (Eden Prairie, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) No. 1 victory over Jason Pressel, 6-2, 6-3.

The final match to wrap up was junior Jackie Jenkins' (College Park, Ga./Westlake) win over Kevin Burnett in the No. 4 position. After Jenkins battled for control, the second set went to a tiebreaker and Jenkins won, 7-4.

The Wildcats travel to Seattle next weekend to participate in the Great Northwest Shootout. Their next home match is Mar. 2, when they take on Big Ten foe Indiana.
