EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team lost to Purdue, 9-5, in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader at Rocky Miller Park.
The Boilermakers used a five-run fifth inning to gain the win, taking advantage of two NU errors to score four via the unearned route.
Purdue drew first blood in the first inning, as Daniel Underwood led off with a single, advanced on a balk by NU starter Gabe Ribas, then scored on a single by Nick McIntyre. The Boilermakers then added a pair in the third inning when David Harrell doubled home David Blomberg and McIntyre.
Northwestern came back to score four times in the bottom half of the inning, though, to take a 4-3 lead. Ken Padgett started the inning with a single, and then Steve Haake doubled down the leftfield line to score Padgett. After Eric Roeder flied out and David Gresky grounded out, advancing Haake to third, Wesley Robinson singled to score Haake. Todd Morgan then walked, before Travis Tharp hit a long single to score Robinson and Morgan.
After a scoreless fourth, Purdue took advantage of NU's defensive miscues for the second game in a row. After Nate Sickler led off with a single and advanced on another Ribas balk, Kris Luce reached base and Sickler advanced to third on an error. Sickler then scored on a John Gusich flyout. John Badylak struck out, but then Mike Duursma walked. Underwood then singled, and on another error advanced to second while Luce and Duursma scored unearned runs. Blomberg doubled home Underwood, and then McIntyre doubled home Blomberg. Andy Adams came on in relief of Ribas, and after walking Sickler to load the bases struck out Luce to end the rally.
Purdue added another run in the sixth on a Badylak homer, and the 'Cats came back with a single run in the bottom half when Roeder singled home Haake.
Haake led the Wildcat offense, going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and one RBI. Morgan added two hits, while Tharp had two RBI.
