VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Northwestern baseball team traveled to Valparaiso, Ind., Tuesday afternoon to play Valparaiso University at Emory G. Bauer Field, winning 10-5. NU scored its 10 runs on nine hits, compared to five runs on 10 hits for the Crusaders. NU's three runs in the top of the ninth sealed junior Zach Schara's (Madison, Wis./West) fourth win of the season.

Schara -- starting his eighth game of the year -- threw six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out seven. Schara improved his team-leading ERA to 2.84 and has struck out 50 hitters in 57.0 innings of work. Freshman Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) threw the seventh and eighth innings, giving up three runs on three hits. Konecny got himself out of a jam in the eighth when he struck out the final two hitters to end a Valparaiso rally. Junior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) made his ninth appearance of the season and worked a perfect final inning.

Offensively, six of NU's 10 runs were unearned as Valparaiso committed four errors in the contest. NU took advantage of the Crusader miscues with clutch hitting. Freshmen Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West) and David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) combined to go 4-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored. Krynski crushed a Tom Starck fastball into the rightfield corner for his first triple of the season, scoring two runs. Leadoff man Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./ Onsted) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while senior Wes Robinson (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) beat out a infield single to go 1-for-3 with a run scored.

In a game that took just under three hours, NU improved its record to 12-16. The `Cats are next in action when they host Big Ten foe Purdue University this weekend in a four-game series at Rocky Miller Park. Game 1 is scheduled for nine innings and begins Friday at 3 p.m.
