EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern Wildcats bounced back from their loss to North Carolina on Saturday, and handed the 45th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. With the 6-1 win over the Tide, NU improves to 5-1 on the season and Alabama is now 7-1.
Northwestern won the doubles point as Shannon Duffy and Marine Piriou collected a win at No. 2 and Lia Jackson and Simona Petrutiu defeated Selia Mathew and Weyli Chang at No. 3.
In a match that lasted almost eight hours, the Wildcats took five of the six singles matches. Jackson and Duffy each went to three sets before taking the wins. Jackson lost the first set, 6-4 before coming back to win the final two, 6-3, 6-3 . Duffy won the first set, 6-1, and lost the second to Jenny Ketchum, 6-4. In an intense third set, it was Duffy who prevailed, 6-3.
Piriou and Petrutiu each won their matches in straight sets. More drama arose at the No. 6 spot, but again, it was Northwestern who would come out on top. Jessica Rush and Alabama's Becca Baum battled it out from start to finish. Rush won the first set, 6-4. Baum countered and took the second, 4-6. Rush squeaked by in the third, winning 7-6.
