Women's Tennis Opens Spring With Win

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team opened up the 2000 spring season with a 5-4 victory over Alabama.
The Wildcats, ranked 20th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, split the six singles matches with the Crimson Tide but earned the win by taking two of the three doubles matches.
In singles, former Big Ten Player of the Year Katherine Nasser was a winner in straight sets at No. 1 while Shannon Duffy won in straight sets at No. 2. Lia Jackson was the other winner, taking a three-set decision at No. 4. At No. 3, Colleen Cheng engaged in an epic match with Millie Begovic before falling in three (4-6, 7-5, 6-4).
In doubles, Nasser and Cheng combined at No. 1 for an 8-4 victory and Duffy teamed with Jennifer Lutgert for an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Northwestern will be back in action Sunday, meeting 17th-ranked South Alabama.
