EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern wrestling team fell to 6-10-1 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten after falling to No. 6 Illinois Sunday afternoon, 36-3. The lone bight spot for the 'Cats was sophomore John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy), who wrestled at 133 and defeated Dave Stoltz, 5-3. Giacche improved his record to 16-11 overall and 8-8 in dual action.
In the heavyweight division, Josh Saul was defeated by No. 5 John Lockhart (UI) in a thrilling match that went to sudden death overtime before Lockhart pulled out the 3-1 victory.
No. 8 Carl Perry of Illinois wrestled Matt Edelstein at 141 pounds because Scott Schatzman, the top-ranked wrestler in the country at 141 pounds, was in Iowa City with his father, who had bypass surgery after suffering a heart attack during last weekend's Northwestern-Iowa dual. Schatzman will rejoin the Wildcats this week as they travel to Minnesota and Wisconsin.
