T.N.T Powers Northwestern’s Defense in 41-7 Win Over Colorado

If there was a song that summed up Northwestern’s defense against Colorado, it would be “T.N.T.” by AC/DC. The song echoed through Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium all night as the Wildcats held the Buffaloes to just seven points. 

For graduate student linebacker Brayden Brus and Northwestern’s defense, though, “T.N.T.” has a different meaning: tackling and takeaways.

“Tackling and takeaways is really what is going to set you up to have these performances,” Brus said. “We harp on it all week. We're thinking about it during practice and so it's a big part of our mindset going into games.” 

That emphasis on tackling and takeaways helped the Wildcats force five turnovers, the most through the first two games of a season for Northwestern since 2020.

Captain Robert Fitzgerald led the Wildcats in tackles for the second consecutive game, finishing Saturday with 11 total tackles. The redshirt senior defensive back also recovered a fumble, becoming just the second Big Ten player since 2005 to record at least 25 tackles and one fumble recovery through the first two games of a season.

The Wildcats’ ability to create turnovers extended to the secondary, where Ore Adeyi and Braden Turner each recorded an interception. Adeyi also added a pass breakup, while Josh Fussell recorded two pass breakups, giving him five through Northwestern’s first two games of the season, the most by a Wildcat through the first two games of a season since at least 2005.

“I don't think we really have a motivator,” Adeyi said. “Every game our mentality is to dominate. Our defense breaks [huddles] out on ‘dominate’ because when we walk on the field, we're always expected to have a dominating effect on our opponent. That's what we had today.”

One of the most encouraging sights for Northwestern was the return of Michael Kilbane. After being sidelined with an injury against South Dakota State, the 6-foot-5 senior made his presence felt against the Buffaloes in his season debut, forcing a fumble and recording six total tackles, including four solo stops. 

Kilbane became the first Wildcat defensive lineman to record at least six tackles, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble since 2022. For Brus, who recovered a fumble of his own, having Kilbane back was a welcome sight.

“Kilbane is the heart and soul of our d-line,” Brus said. “It just is exciting knowing you have such a playmaker down there, and it obviously showed today.”

While Kilbane missed only Northwestern’s season opener this season, Damon Walters’ road back to the field has been considerably longer. The redshirt junior defensive back dealt with injuries all throughout the 2025 season. Since returning this year, Walters has recorded 16 total tackles, one interception and one pass breakup.

Against Colorado, Walters’ six solo tackles led the team, with many coming in difficult open-field situations. His return has been noticeable to his teammates, with Brus calling his success “well earned” and Adeyi pointing to the improvement he has made since his last full season in 2024.

“I think he's way better,” Adeyi said. “I've seen him go from Honorable Mention All-Big Ten to I feel like I'm seeing an All-Big 10 talent. He's a crazy athlete, a person that I love playing with. I know that I can play aggressively, knowing that I got Damon back there.”

The Wildcats also stopped Colorado on fourth down three times Saturday, their most in a game since last season’s victory against Purdue in October.

The game marked the final Northwestern football game at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, with the Wildcats finishing their run at the temporary stadium on a five-game winning streak. They also opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 2020.

Now, Northwestern turns its attention to defending national champion Indiana. For Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach David Braun, Saturday’s performance provided an early indication of what his team could be capable of against the schedule ahead.

“I think it tells us that we can play with anybody,” Braun said. “We’re built for the schedule that's in front of us, as long as we take it one day at a time and truly don't get ahead of ourselves. You can start to sense some things coming together, and also you can really understand we are far from being a finished product. I'm excited for the test that's ahead. We're gonna find out a lot about our football team over the course of the next few days.”
