EVANSTON, Ill. (August 20, 2026) – Andrew Millar, Italo Addimandi, and Tre Barrett each found the back of the net as Northwestern (1-0) picked up a 3-1 win over visiting New Haven (0-1) in the 2026 opener for both teams this evening at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

How It Happened
Northwestern went on the attack from the onset, with Millar and Toryn Penders each registering attempts in the opening minutes.  Millar cashed in just past the quarter-hour mark, firing home a feed from Bryant Mayer at the edge of the 18-yard box to give the ‘Cats a well-deserved 1-0 lead.

Peter Riesz made a pair of bids to double the lead as the half wore on, forcing saves out of New Haven netminder Shane Antao.  Dominic Pereira was called into action in the 36th minute, as he collected Matheus Guimaraes’ effort to ensure a one-goal edge at the intermission.

The Wildcats found their second goal of the night off a set-piece opportunity in the 57th minute.  Following a pair of blocked tries in rapid succession, Marco Silva sent his corner kick delivery towards the back post, where a leaping Addimandi directed home to push the lead to 2-0.

After seeing New Haven claw back within one, 2-1, shortly after Addimandi’s tally, Northwestern went back on the hunt for insurance.  Gabriel Smyth saw his shot from close-range parried away by Antao before Andrew Johnson ultimately headed just wide of goal off the resulting corner kick.  Antao was up to the task again in the 73rd minute, tipping Riesz’s shot from 18 yards out wide of his far post.

Barrett extinguished any lingering hopes of a New Haven comeback with just over five minutes remaining.  Following a foul on the edge of the box, the junior let fly with a left-footed effort that bested Antao to make it 3-1 and cement Northwestern’s fourth straight win in a season opener.

Looking At The Numbers
- Millar’s opening goal marked the seventh of his collegiate career.
