EVANSTON, Ill. - Michigan State sophomore Maureen Tuip had a hat trick to lead the Spartans past Northwestern in field hockey action Friday afternoon, 5-1, in East Lansing, Mich.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 4-6 overall (0-4 Big Ten), while MSU raised its record to 8-5 (1-3 Big Ten).

Tuip got the scoring started 11 minutes into the contest, and then Bridget Cooper tallied with 2:31 left in the half to make the score 2-0 at the break. In the second half, Michigan State put it away with the first three goals, as Tuip followed up a Sanne van Nouhuys score with two more of her own.

Northwestern got on the board with 4:50 left when Amy Haase converted a penalty stroke. However, on the day the Wildcats were outshot by the Spartans, 14-7, and forced MSU goalie Mireille Evans to make just five saves. Jessica Yates, meanwhile, was called on to make nine stops in the Northwestern cage.

The Wildcats will be back in action Sunday afternoon, playing Michigan in another Big Ten contest in Ann Arbor.
